The Family Finance Check-Up

10 Things to Review This Year

Not sure where to start? Here's what a real financial review actually covers.

                     Protection

Life insurance coverage

Does it reflect your current income, debts, and family size? (Coverage from 5+ years ago is often outdated.)

Disability insurance

If you couldn't work for 6 months, would your family be okay?

Beneficiary designations

On life insurance, retirement accounts, and investments. (Life changes — marriages, divorces, new kids — but beneficiaries often don't get updated.)

              Savings & Debt

Emergency fund

Do you have 3–6 months of expenses set aside?

High-interest debt

Any credit card or loan balances costing you more than your investments are earning?

Savings rate
Are you saving a consistent % of income, or just whatever's left over?

Future Planning

Retirement contributions

Are you contributing enough to get any employer match? On track for your retirement goals?

Education savings

If you have kids, is there a plan (RESP, etc.) in place?

Will & estate documents

Do you have an up-to-date will? Power of attorney? (Many families don't — and it matters more than people think.)

The Big Picture

Annual check-in

Are you reviewing all of this at least once a year, ideally with someone who can spot the gaps?
